How to Add Green Screen Captions in Final Cut Pro

Step-by-step guide to importing and keying green screen caption videos in Final Cut Pro using the Keyer effect.

Editor: Final Cut Pro
Recommended Effect: Keyer Effect
Background Color: Chroma Green (#00FF00)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Import Both Video Files

In Final Cut Pro, import your original footage video along with the exported green screen caption video file (captions-greenscreen.mp4).

Project Media Bin

Primary Video Track
captions-greenscreen.mp4
Exported Caption Track (Exact Duration Match)
2

Place Caption Video on Track Above at 0:00

Drag your caption video onto an overlay track directly above your main footage on the timeline. Align the start point to exactly 0:00 so captions remain in perfect synchronization with speech.

Apply Keyer Effect

Navigate to Effects Browser → Keying → Keyer. Use the color picker / eyedropper tool to select the bright green background.

Recommended Settings:
  • Auto-samples green color on drop
  • Refine Key / Sample Color
  • Edge Smoothing
4

Verify Crisp Text Edges & Playback

The green background disappears completely, leaving your styled captions floating cleanly over your video. If any tiny green outline is visible, increase tolerance/shadow slightly.

Alternative: Black Background + Screen Blend

In Vaanex AI, you can also export with a Black background. In your video editor, change the caption clip's blend mode to Screen or Add. This eliminates the need for chroma keying entirely and is ideal for glowing styles like Neon Glow.
